Life gives us great opportunities to live, learn and grow. Sometimes, those lessons are taught by happy moments and sometimes, they are taught through moments we wish to never repeat. Today, I learned a powerful life lesson through a moment in time that I wish had never happened and I wish to never happen again. But, life can’t be that way and we can’t wish back the hard moments. So we live, learn and grow from them. (Or at least we hope we can do so.)

I sat with my best friend at the local McDonald’s catching up about the weeks that had passed since we had last seen each other. We sat smiling as we listened to our three boys playing happily in the McDonald’s play land. It was a quiet day with only two other families with a few young kids each. We had been to that play land plenty of times before without problems from any other families or children.

Share on FacebookPin on PinterestTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+Email this to someoneShare on StumbleUponPrint this page

pretend play coverIn the early Toddler months, your child should start to engage in “pretend play”. Pretend play is that awesome time when your child brings you imaginary cookies, plays with dolls (bathes, feeds, comforts) talks to toys, interacts and plays with toys approriatly etc…. Pretend play is a very important time in your child’s life and opens the door to many more imaginary opportunities later in life!

Pretend play should also be important to you!!! It helps with your child’s development, practices and teaches problem solving, teaches story telling, increases language (Especially adult world language- think, “Bye Daddy, I’m going to work”) and most of all….keeps them from getting bored!!!

Why is my Child Swearing?! (and what to do about it)

IMG_2880

There are few things more embarrassing than your child spouting off a horrible nasty word at an inopportune moment. Sometimes we just slip and use a bad word in front of our child….and sometimes unfortunately they hear it in other places beyond our control…So..what to do, what to do??

Why is my child swearing!?

As kids (especially toddlers) begin to learn how to create deeper relationships with people, they start to better understand the power behind language. It doesn’t take long for children to figure out that an insult, or colorful language will more than likely get quite the reaction out of a target audience. Put that together with toddler and children’s endless search for new knowledge and vocabulary…and you might just have a perfect combination for some moments of embarrassment with their choice in language!

How to Use First/Then Behavior Charts + Free Printable!!!

First/Then charts are one of my favorite behavior aids! They are easy to use and easy for kids to understand! It can be SO hard for our tiny humans to grasp the concept of First/Then. “FIRST we are eating dinner, THEN you can play outside”.  When really, all they heard was, “play outside”. By using a “First/Then” chart you can help them understand by giving them a visual.

First/Then charts are also amazing to use as simple picture schedules. For many children, especially those with disabilities, having a visual picture schedule is CRUCIAL! By using a First/Then schedule your kids will be able to anticipate what is going to happen next. This in itself can eliminate many problem behaviors.
